The RA Automatic Transfer Switch, seamlessly paired with the RS series generator sets, is recognized under UL 1008 for transfer switch safety standards. Designed for efficiency, this switch and generator set duo ensures a streamlined and faster installation process. These switches, certified to UL 1008 standards, are perfectly suited for standby power systems in both residential and light commercial settings, conforming to the guidelines of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
Constantly monitoring utility power, the RA transfer switch operates 24/7. In events where utility power is inadequate or lost, it triggers the generator set to start and then automatically shifts the load. Once the utility voltage stabilizes, the switch automatically reverts the electrical load from the generator back to the utility, requiring no manual input from the homeowner.
The RA series also includes models designed for service entrances. These variants, in addition to being UL 1008 listed, incorporate a circuit breaker that is UL 489 listed, ensuring enhanced safety and reliability.
The Cummins® Transfer Switch, part of the RA Series, is a single-phase, automatic, service entrance model. It operates at 120 VAC with a capacity of 200 A and features a 2 Pole, Molded Case Breaker. With a transfer time of 100 ms and housed in a NEMA 3R enclosure, it includes screw terminals and operates efficiently in temperatures ranging from -13 to 131 degrees Fahrenheit. The unit’s dimensions are 23.3 inches in height, 19.8 inches in width, and 7.2 inches in depth.
This device features a contactor with a mechanical interlock, ensuring durable and secure connections. It’s equipped with long-lasting, high-pressure silver alloy contacts that are resistant to burning and pitting. The mechanism is powered by a solenoid that is both potent and cost-effective.
There is a robust bus bar connection linking the circuit breaker and the transfer switch. The device includes a neutral and ground bar that are fully rated, alongside a bonding jumper for both. These bars are made from silver-plated copper, enhancing their conductivity and durability. For external power connections, the device uses solderless screw-type terminals.
The 2-pole switch engages in an independent break-before-make action. A mechanical interlock is in place to prevent the simultaneous closing of normal and emergency contacts. Similarly, electrical interlocks are designed to avert concurrent closing signals to normal and emergency contacts and to block the interconnection of these power sources through the control wiring.
The contacts are mechanically held in both normal and emergency positions, which contributes to a reliable and quiet operation. The device can function effectively in humidity levels up to 90% at 20 degrees Celsius and at altitudes up to 2000 meters (6561 feet) without any need for derating.
For maintenance and troubleshooting purposes, the transfer switches are outfitted with a removable operating handle. This feature allows for operation when servicing is required, even with the power sources disconnected. The transfer time is guaranteed not to exceed 100 milliseconds when normal voltage is applied to the actuator.
The lug capacities for the transfer switch accommodate a range of wire sizes. For the utility service entrance, it accepts 4 AWG to 300 kcmil for both copper and aluminum. The transfer switch and neutral only accept 6 AWG to 300 kcmil for copper and aluminum, and the generator service entrance accepts 14 to 2/0 AWG for copper and aluminum. For ground service entrance, it can handle 14 to 1/0 AWG for both copper and aluminum.
Additionally, the device is equipped with 10000 A coordinated molded case breakers, further enhancing its robustness and safety features.
